You've got the Power: Proving Your Worth in a Male-Dominated Workplace

#ContributedPost

Being a woman in a male-focused office is tough. Even in 2019, some men still find it difficult to accept female colleagues as equals.

There's a good chance that you had to fight your way to the top, and you’re probably still fighting. Every day may feel like a struggle, as you attempt to prove your worth to a team who doesn't believe in you.

There are many ways that men can put female coworkers down in the workplace, and they're all problematic.

Some men make comments about ‘the woman’s true place.’ Others share their two cents on a woman's appearance, aiming to make her feel insecure.

If things get especially bad, female employees may face unwanted advances and physical violations.

Ultimately, it all comes back to powerplay. Men use these methods purposefully, in hopes that women will constantly stay below them on the food chain.

The good news? The days of male-dominated power are behind us. You’re lucky enough to be a modern woman, meaning that you have the power to recognize these petty methods.

You're also able to prevent men from succeeding with these powerplay moves. All you have to do is prove them wrong. Here are some ways to do that.

Let your work do the talking.

Men often put women down to distract them, in hopes that their work will suffer as a result.

Therefore, your best chance at overcoming their attempts is to let your work do the talking. By producing top-quality content for every job, you can rise above

Regardless of what male coworkers say about you, clients will be impressed with your work and start requesting you.

Before you know it, you'll become a boss's favorite. The more you work hard and impress, the more difficult it is for a man to make a demeaning comment and bring you down.

Speak up in meetings.

Despite what we’re often led to believe, the days of silencing women are far from over. While it might not be as obvious, men still strategically steal our spotlight to ensure that we don't have a voice.

Your male co-workers often assume that if they fill you with enough doubt, you'll stay quiet during meetings.

Prove them wrong by making a conscious effort to speak up in every meeting possible.Plan your talking points in advance, so that you can speak confidently and capture the room

If your boss brings your ideas on board, it’ll send a hard and fast lesson to the men who tried to take your voice in the first place.

Get on your clients' best side.

Keep in mind that coworkers aren’t the most important people you’ll deal with each day. They don’t decide how much money you make, or how high up you'll climb in the company.

For the most part, these decisions come down to your clients. If your clients can’t say a bad word about you, your boss is liable to promote you. It doesn't matter what the rest of your team thinks.

So if you still can’t get your male coworkers onboard despite your best efforts, forget about them. Instead, pile all your energy into impressing the people who really matter to your success.
