The Best Virginia Cities for Millennials

Published on

When you think of millennial-centric hubs, cities like Seattle, Austin, and Los Angeles may first come to mind.

These cities have gained a reputation for their significant millennial population, largely due to career opportunities, culture, and vibrant local scenes.

However, other regions around the U.S. are emerging as up-and-coming millennial hot spots. Many cities in Virginia have seen an influx of younger residents over the last few years.

Some arrive seeking work or education, while others are simply itching for a change in scenery. Let's explore a few of the best cities in Virginia for millennials.

Arlington

With its cemetery of headstone-eating trees, a humorously-named parking garage, and the world’s longest escalator, Arlington is one of the quirkiest cities in Virginia.

A large amount of millennials have been flocking to Arlington over the last few years, leading it to be named the Best City for Millennials in 2017 by Niche.

This is certainly an impressive honor, considering it was up against east coast cities like Philadelphia and New York.

Arlington is packed with millennial hangouts like coffee shops, restaurants, and bars. Therefore, you can find something fun to do on any night of the week.

If you're thinking of checking Arlington out, be warned that you'll probably get hooked. Just one visit might have you searching for your own piece of Virginia real estate!

Richmond

Virginia’s capital city has become a millennial magnet in recent years, largely because many other east coast cities are too pricey.

The Richmond housing market is much more affordable than other spots, leading more and more millennials to make those moves.

The city is home to the University of Richmond, a popular liberal arts college. Downtown Richmond has a number of restaurants, shops, and luxury apartment complexes, and the younger demographic has definitely taken notice.

In essence, Richmond is the perfect city for millennials who want the big city experience without breaking the bank!

Merrifield

For millennials working on Capitol Hill, Merrifield is a great place to live.

A suburb of Washington, D.C., many people settle down in Merrifield due to its close proximity and easy access to D.C.

Merrifield particularly attracts liberal young professionals who seek a safe area with easy accessibility to cool bars, coffee shops, and other local attractions.

Downtown Merrifield is also extremely walkable. On weekends, many residents can be found dining at sidewalk cafes and hanging out in one of the city’s beautiful parks.

Alexandria

Alexandria is one of the most quaint little cities on the east coast! Another city in close proximity to Washington D.C., this spot is a popular choice for millennials entering the workforce.

Alexandria also has a prominent LGBTQ scene. This has led many businesses in the city to adopt an LGBTQ-friendly policy, welcoming people from all walks of life with open arms.

Alexandria is especially beautiful during the holiday season. Make sure to check out Old Town Alexandria, the historic center of the city.

For millennials looking to live in a picture-perfect area that’s not far from D.C., Alexandria is a great option.
