Calling all Recent Grads: Here's How to Wander Your Way to a Writing Career

Published on

So you're officially a college graduate, and eager to dive headfirst into the wonderful world of writing. First, keep in mind that there's no obvious path to take - which can be a good thing. This lack of structured direction offers the freedom to discover various strategies that work for you, based on your individual circumstances.

However, the downside is that there’s no guidance. Nobody is there to lead you to your end destination, and it's up to you to figure out your own journey.

Intimidated? Don't be. Rather than starting at square one, here are a few suggested paths to try.

To the Basement

If you’ve had a story bubbling inside of you for longer than you can remember, it might be time to take advantage of your new-found freedom and get it down on paper. After all, if you’re planning on getting a job in the not-too-distant future, this might be your golden opportunity to truly focus on perfecting your writing skills.

New Adventures

Stories don’t always come from within. As the writer in The Grand Budapest Hotel says, "All you need to write a story is to look and listen."

Since you've grown accustomed to your immediate surroundings, take advantage of your freedom to move elsewhere and go on new adventures.

If you live in an urban area, check out somewhere more rural. That change of lifestyle might be the inspiration you needed to get your creative juices flowing. Worried about supporting yourself? Head over to https://www.hansenagriplacement.com and work towards getting an agriculture job.

Overseas

Alternatively, you could always look further afield. In today’s world, there are a million and one options for people who want to go adventuring abroad

An overseas trip will present you with plenty of new writing material. Plus, it will help grow your confidence and expand your knowledge of the world.

These combined benefits can help you take your writing career to the next level. The more radical the experience, the better the material.

Into the Thick of the Action

While new life experiences can serve up some serious inspiration, you don't need to alter your lifestyle to move your writing career forward.

Some people draw their inspiration from their own life, and others get ideas from the creative work of others.

If you fall into the latter category, head over to the creative hotspots in your town. You can also take it a step further and move to a cultural mecca like New York or San Francisco, and find work in a creative industry. With those surroundings, you’re bound to be inspired to keep writing.

Ultimately, growing as a writer is all about experiences. By making the most of life, you'll be well on your way to success.
